The role of a school counselor is far more complex and diverse than most people realize. It isn’t just about making sure that each student is on track to meet their graduation requirements, it’s also about keeping an eye out for those children who need some extra encouragement, help, or recognition. Childhood and adolescence can be a difficult time for people who don’t fit the typical mold, but people like you make these kids’ lives a little easier. Whether they struggle academically, socially, emotionally, or physically, spotting those in need can be hard. Time and time again, you have demonstrated that you actively seek those who need you (breakfast club, seminars on emotional issues during Covid, monitoring individual student’s progress, reaching out to the parents when you see a child sitting alone on campus frequently, the list goes on). I know that both of my children have stated you have been an advocate on their behalf. They have both felt your support and have been bolstered and encouraged by your kind words and belief in them. I am certain in other schools my kids would easily fall through the cracks. Maybe children with behavioral issues who were bullying or disruptive would require more of the resources, or possibly those in your position would simply not get to know my kids well enough to see their potential. Either way, we were extremely fortunate to have had you in our lives. You have made a difference to our family, and I have no doubt you have made a difference to countless other families over your career. We are saddened you will be retiring but know it is a well-deserved promotion. Thank you for everything.
